Five Guys Burgers named Best fast Food Burger by Zagats Survey.

Congratulations to the Lorton, Virginia based Five Guys for taking the title as “Best Fast Food Burger” in the US, knocking California based In-N-Out Burger from the top seat. Known for their fresh ground beef double pattied burgers topped with a myriad of choices, and a gi-normous order of fries, Five Guys Burgers are a staple for many families when choosing to dine out. The survey was based on responses from 6,518 Zagat.com diners who ate at chain outlets an average of 10.7 times per month.

Some suggestions when you go to Five Guys:

The Little burger option on the menu is a single pattied burger sufficient for most hungers. The Hamburger or Cheeseburger is double pattied, and full of fresh grilled, meaty goodness.

The tops are quite plentiful and include

Mayo

Relish

Onions

Lettuce

Pickles

Tomatoes

Grilled Onions

Grilled Mushrooms

Ketchup

Mustard

Jalapeno Peppers

Green Peppers

A-1 Sauce

Bar-B-Q Sauce

Hot Sauce

So mix and match your heart content!

The regular order of fries, consisting of fresh peeled potatoes (not frozen) fried in peanut oil is usually enough to feed a small troop of cub scouts, and the large order has been known to satisfy biker groups. The Cajun seasoning is always sprinkled on at order, so the Cajun fries usually have a nice spice but are not saturated with heat.

In addition to hamburgers, cheeseburgers and bacon topped version of each, Five Guys also serves Hot Dogs that can be topped with chilli and/ or cheese, Veggie Burgers and Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. Unfortunately, I have never tried any of these as the burgers are just too good and I have never personally had any reason to try anything but.

What to expect from Five Guys?

In my travels around the Hampton Roads area, I have stopped in and enjoyed burgers at many locations and the same is always true. Smallish dinning rooms filled with locals, smiling and enjoying their meals. A fountain drink dispenser of to side. The big surprise is always that the counter and burger prep area takes up more space than anything else. The orders are promptly taken and passed to the prep area behind, where you can watch them assemble the order to your exact specifications. While you wait you can enjoy some shelled peanuts, but I have never had a chance to go through a whole portion as the burgers are ready before I can crack and shell and pop the salted nuts.

On another note, whether there by myself or with the family, I have placed many an order with Five Guys for custom ordered burgers of mixed and matched ingredients, no two the same. And so far, after 5 years of trying, Five Guys has never screwed up an order yet. I have never had to go back to the counter and said “You forgot my..” or “I ordered a…and you gave me….” Can any of us say that about our experiences at those other assembly line international burger pushers?

So, if you get the chance, and are hungry for a good burger, stop by the nearest Five Guys you see. You won’t be disappointed.

“Pastimes of Colonial Virginia” – games, storytelling and other amusements of the 17th and 18th centuries – will be the focus of interpretive programs at Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center living-history museums throughout the month of August.

Ever spin a whirligig on a string or hear the sound of a rommel pot play?

At the Yorktown Victory Center, a museum of the American Revolution, visitors can learn how Colonial Era soldiers used board games such as nine-men’s morris, cards and dice to pass the time during the war. Visitors also can learn how to play “shut the box,” a counting game. At the re-created 1780s farm, visitors can spin whirligigs on a string, try to scoop a ball into a cup, roll a hoop with a stick, jump rope, and play trap ball and the game of “Graces,” in which players toss a ribboned hoop to one another using sticks. Throughout the day, historical interpreters in the farm also will recount Aesop’s Fables, popular children’s literature in the mid-1700s.

“Pastimes of Colonial Virginia” – games, storytelling and other amusements of the 17th and 18th centuries – will be the focus of interpretive programs at Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center living-history museums throughout the month of August.

At Jamestown Settlement, a museum of 17th-century Virginia history and culture, historical interpreters will engage visitors in a variety of games and activities used by early Virginians not only to pass the time but develop important skills. In the re-created Powhatan Indian village, visitors can test their aim by pitching corncob darts through hoops.

On board one of three replica ships, historical interpreters will discuss how America’s first permanent English colonists played games of draughts, or checkers, and wooden dice to amuse themselves on the 1607 voyage to Virginia, and visitors may try their hand at knotwork.

At the riverfront discovery area, where interpreters discuss 17th-century water travel, commerce and cultural exchange, visitors can learn about and play the traditional African game mancala. In the re-created 1610-14 colonial fort, visitors can ride wooden hobby horses, roll a hoop with a stick, and play ninepins, a bowling game, and quoits, a type of ring toss. Orientation tours of the four outdoor interpretive areas begin daily at 11 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m.

The two history museums feature extensive gallery exhibits that tell the story of America’s beginnings. At Jamestown Settlement, gallery exhibits describe traditional recreation and art of the Powhatan Indian, English and west central African cultures that converged in 1600s Virginia. An exhibit about children’s education and play compares examples of 17th-century and modern toys. Among the artifacts in the Yorktown Victory Center’s Witness to Revolution Gallery, is a circa-1775 British game box used to play 18th-century card games of quadrille and ombre.

Many of the activities and games, including corn cob darts, nine-men’s morris, ninepins and mancala, are available for purchase in the Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center gift shops.

Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center are open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, there is an admittion fee. Children under 6 are admitted free. Parking is free. A variety of package and ticket options are available with Williamsburg area attractions. “Pastimes of Colonial Virginia” is funded in part by the York County Arts Commission.

Recommendations for some great local attractions, museums and venues to help pass a rainy day in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Worried about the weather forecast? Fearful that you are going to come to Portsmouth and won’t be able to leave your hotel room because of all of the rain. Don’t let the threat of barometric depressions get you depressed. There are many attractions and activities in the Portsmouth that are not only entertaining but many actually sneak some educational value by you.

Here is a short list of some of our favorite things to do on a rainy day in Portsmouth:

Andalo’s Clubhouse
presented by the Children’s Museum of Virginia

The Children’s Museum of Virginia is a favorite destination amongst youngsters for interactive play and learning. Currently it is closed for renovations, however, the fun, excitement, and imagination continues at Andalo’s Clubhouse. Andalo, the museum mascot, presents hands-on exhibits, room for birthday parties, family fun days, and educational programs – just like the Children’s Museum of Virginia always has! Some examples of fun activities include. Jolly Rogers Academy of Pirating, 3D Art Explosion and Time Traveler Summer Camp. Visit their website for the latest offering in their daily activities, Family Fun Days, and workshops.

420 High Street.

Website

Courthouse Galleries

The Greek-Revival building is an imposing one, surrounded by a wrought-iron fence and nearly hidden behind the massive oak trees that shade its courtyard. Built in 1846, it served as the Norfolk County Courthouse until 1960. Now it is home to the Courthouse Galleries, an art museum with two spacious galleries of ever-changing exhibits; however, the Courthouse Galleries is more than just an art museum. It’s a relaxing gathering place where you can learn the art of growing Bonsai trees one week and see a demonstration of glass blowing the next. Every First Friday, the Courthouse Galleries typically offers free musical entertainment. On the First Sunday of the month, educational programs – such as gallery talks and seminars that complement the exhibits – are open to the public, also free of charge. Art classes, lectures, poetry readings and book signings round out the vast array of offerings at the museum.

On the corner of High and Court
(757) 393-8543

Lightship Portsmouth Museum

Lightships were built to help mariners avoid dangerous shoals or enter safely into harbors at night. Years ago, lights were fixed to masts of ships that anchored for months in strategic locations off the coastline. One such ship can be visited at the foot of London Street on the Portsmouth waterfront. The Lightship Portsmouth was commissioned in 1915 and has since been restored to its original condition. In 1989, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. Visitors can board the vessel and see how the men of the Lightship Service lived during their many months at sea.

At the foot of London Street on the waterfront in Historic Olde Towne Portsmouth.
(757) 393-8741

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum

If you’re interested in local or naval history, or memorabilia from a centuries-old Southern port, you’ll find the Naval Shipyard Museum a delight. Established in 1949 within the nation’s oldest shipyard, the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Museum was later moved to the Portsmouth waterfront at High Street Landing on the Elizabeth River.

2 High St.
(757) 393-8591

Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum

With two stories of hands-on sports and health exhibits, this attraction celebrates nearly 300 past and present athletes and inspires future ones. Drive a NASCAR simulator, test the speed of your baseball pitch, and take your turn at the microphone as a broadcaster. Kids and adults alike will learn about fitness, nutrition and sports medicine in the Training Room, complete with virtual exercise equipment and a skeleton that rides a bike! A great place for the whole family. Group rates available. The Hall of Fame is also a unique venue for your next reunion, business meeting, or formal reception. Call today to schedule a tour.

So enjoy breakfast in bed, a late brunch, afternoon cocktails, all from the luxury of your own bed. Also, if you like venturing beyond your room, enjoy cloud watching while savoring the atmosphere at Foggy Point Bar & Grill, presenting a selection of fresh seafood.
Overlooking the harbor, this Portsmouth Hotel has a great outdoor terrace with one of the most unique vantage points and views overlooking the Elizabeth River. Watch the port traffic drift in and out. Who knows, you might even catch a glimpse of Navy sub meander out to sea.
